A vast spectrum of nail trends hit the runway for the spring and summer 2018 season. From understated nude and neutrals to striking graphics and embellishments, this season is definitely about experimenting with juxtaposed variety.

Graphics

The tweed pattern nail art featured in the Christian Siriano show is quite breathtaking with the combination of purple, yellow, green, black, and pink on a white canvas. The lines are chaotic and can be easily replicated at home with a fine brush. Byblos featured an interesting graphic design reminiscent of bright inkblots splattered on a white base. Kith had the Champion logo as nail art in red, white, and blue, which goes along with the Americana trend that was seen on the runway in different collections for 2018. Kenzo presented a very bold black and yellow animal print. Overall, saturated colors and abstract art were heavily used in these graphic nail designs.

Nudes

Plenty of nude nails were seen on the runway for spring and summer 2018 including designers such as Derek Lam, Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior, Michael Kors, and Carolina Herrera. Nude nails are a classic and will be very much on trend this year. Advantages of a nude nail is that they complement every outfit and are a bit more flexible for upkeep.

Flowers and Foliage

Very appropriate to the season, we saw quite a few florals on the runway. Novis and Creatures of Comfort showcased abstract designs of petals and foliage. Ryan Lo had large, delicate flowers on nude nails. Christian Siriano had a fun feature of tiny colorful flowers on the nail tips. Floral details ranged from colorful to nude and from graphic to more abstract designs. The spectrum was quite wide, so feel free to incorporate florals into your next mani-pedi.

Brights

Bright hues were seen on numerous shows for S/S 2018. Cherry tomato red and similar variations were seen on shows such as Adam Selman and Giorgio Armani. Jeremy Scott displayed several brights including a Barbie pink and a tangerine orange shade. Grass green painted nails with a black border were showcased by Roksanda.

Metallics

Metallics were all the rage for the spring and summer shows. Gold, rose gold, silver, metallic hues, and sparkles were abundant on nails. Tom Ford presented a highly sophisticated rose gold and black ombré finish on almond shaped nails. Anna Sui featured glitter on clear nails for a minimalist look. Shiny gold nails were showcased at the Oscar de la Renta show on short nails. Following the violet trend of 2018, Rebecca Minkoff used a metallic violet on violet chevron design, which is a more graphic variation of the metallic nail display.

Subtle Accents

A fun twist was added to minimalist nails by adding a delicate element to one or more nails for S/S 2018. Alice + Olivia showcased aqua french tips on nude nails for a delicate spring look. 3.1 Phillip Lim used a subtle black horizontal stripe detail on one nail while the rest of the nails revealed a nude polish. Cristiano Burani presented vertical black zigzag lines on all nude nails for an edgy yet minimal look. A bright green heart was showed on nude nails at Vivetta, which added a whimsical flair. Baja East mixed neutrals by using black, white, and sand colored polishes in a modern and chic manicure. Adding subtle accents is an ideal way to incorporate brights and edgy elements into neutral polished nails.

3D Embellishments

A more extravagant take on nail trends were seen at Gucci and Libertine this season utilizing 3D embellishments on their manicures. Gucci featured bold gold rings with pearl strands that ended at black painted nails. While the embellishments were not placed directly on the nail, the three-dimensional concept remains the same. Libertine showcased more eccentric embellishments including tassels, safety pins, rhinestones, and lace.

Nail Typography

Typography can be utilized as a subtle or bold accent on nails as seen in shows like Monse and Preen. Kith used the Champion logo on their nails displaying a classic Americana theme. Monse used an “M” only on one nail while the rest had a glossy neutral. Preen featured bold large letters spelling out “Life Force” against a white polish. Nail typography design can be achieved by painting freehand, stamping, or via nail appliqués.
